Guti Bids Farewell To Madrid

25 07 2010

Legendary Real Madrid midfielder Guti is set to end his 24 year stay at the club by leaving on a free transfer, despite having one year left on his contract. The former Spain international has been at the club since he was nine years old.

During his 15 year professional career at Los Merengues, he won a staggering 15 trophies including five league titles and the Champions League three times. He played a total of 542 games and scored 77 goals.

His departure could pave the way for him to join former Real Madrid boss Bernd Schuster at Turkish outfit Besiktas. Blackburn Rovers manager Sam Allardyce tried to sign him earlier in the summer but could not persuade him to move to England.

In a press conference in Madrid, Guti said: “Thank you to everyone. I go knowing that Real Madrid will always be my home.

“I leave knowing that Real Madrid wants me and that is very important.”

On the subject of a transfer to Besiktas, he continued: “I have a good offer from them, an interesting one. Now we’ll see. It wasn’t an easy decision [to leave Real Madrid].”
