Serie A Introduces Foreign Player Cap

4 07 2010

The Italian Football Federation has introduced a new ruling which restricts Serie A teams from signing more than one non-EU player per season. The signing can only happen to replace an outgoing non-EU player.

The decision is said to have been made following Italy’s disastrous World Cup campaign which saw them finish in last place in their group.

The move has enraged many officials of Italian clubs. Lega Calcio, the governing body of Serie A and B, has criticised the decision. President Mario Beretta said: “It won’t solve anything.

AC Milan president Adriano Galliani agreed saying: “This won’t resolve the problems in Italian football. I absolutely share the position put forth by the Lega Calcio and president Beretta.”
