Manchester City are ready to take their summer spending to £90m by attempting to lure England midfielder James Milner in a £25m move from Aston Villa.

City are expected to make an improved bid for Milner in the next seven to ten days after having an initial £20m offer for the England international rejected by Aston Villa. They have also not given up hope of landing Bosnia-Herzegovina striker Edin Dzeko despite Wolfsburg’s £50m asking price.

Liverpool-bound Roy Hodgson wants to spend the £15m transfer budget he will be handed when he arrives as boss at Anfield on midfielder Gilberto Silva, defender Brede Hangeland, forward Rafael van der Vaart and midfielder Danny Murphy.

Barcelona will launch a £25m bid for Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano as soon as Yaya Toure completes his drawn-out move to Manchester City.

Barcelona also look set to beat Arsenal to the signing of Germany playmaker Mesut Ozil. Barcelona are reportedly ready to offer £18m for the 21-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of next season, and allow him to stay at his current club Werder Bremen on loan next season.

After spending much of the World Cup warming the bench for Spain, Barcelona transfer target Cesc Fabregas may stay at Arsenal after all.

The Gunners are weighing up a move for £10m-rated Germany defender Per Mertesacker and are already close to finalising an £8.5m deal for defender Laurent Koscielny from French club Lorient.

West Ham are closing in on a deal to sign Brazilian wonderkid Neymar on a season-long loan, before the 18-year-old Santos forward joins Chelsea in a year’s time.

Sunderland are close to completing a deal for Nigeria striker John Utaka from Portsmouth in a £2m deal.

The Black Cats have bid £7m for England defender Matthew Upson. They hope that may tempt cash-strapped West Ham into selling.

Sol Campbell, 35, has stalled on joining Celtic because he is holding out for a new deal at Arsenal.

Fulham have rejected a £6m bid from Birmingham for striker Bobby Zamora, while Burnley striker Robbie Blake has joined Bolton on a free transfer. Martin Petrov has also joined Blake in arriving at the Reebok on a free transfer.

Fulham have targeted West Ham striker Carlton Cole as a ready-made replacement for Zamora, who is set to follow manager Roy Hodgson out of West London.

Alan Curbishley could be set for a players’ revolt if he replaces Hodgson as Fulham manager as Danny Murphy, Paul Konchesky, John Pantsil and Booby Zamora could demand moves from the Europa League finalists.

Roy Hodgson’s two-year contract as Liverpool manager, which is expected to be signed on Thursday, will not contain a release clause allowing him to take the England job.

David Platt is being lined up as Roberto Mancini’s number two. The former Arsenal and England midfielder has been friends with the Manchester City manager since they played at Sampdoria.

England’s Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard have pulled the plug on a £16m football extravaganza to be held at the O2 Arena in London. The duo were due to be paid £500,000 each for one day’s work next month for participating in a skills challenge with a mix of top stars including Didier Drogba, Crisitano Ronaldo, David Villa and Cesc Fabregas. The event has now been postponed until next summer.
